Catholic grade schools will start 2021 remotely

Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago will pivot to remote learning for two weeks at the start of 2021. Schools will begin e-learning on Jan. 4 and will return on Jan. 19 after the Martin Luther King Day holiday. In a letter to parents sent Friday, Jim Rigg, superintendent of Catholic Schools, said the switch was made to allow families who travel or have large family gatherings during Thanksgiving and Christmas to quarantine for 14 days to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19 in its schools. Craig announces re-election bid, candidate slate in Hanover Park

Hanover Park Village President Rodney Craig has announced his bid for reelection next spring. He’s running with a slate that includes four trustee candidates with two other incumbents among them and a new candidate for village clerk. Identifying themselves as members of the Hanover Park Strong party, the slate includes incumbent Bob Prigge and newcomers Tonya Frosheiser and Syed Hussaini running for four-year trustee terms, Liza Guterriez seeking a two-year trustee term to complete the term she was previously appointed to, and Kristy Merrill for village clerk. Brazil approves import of Chinese shot that Bolsonaro nixed

SAO PAULO — Brazil’s health regulator has authorized the import from China of a potential vaccine against the coronavirus, just days after President Jair Bolsonaro insisted he wouldn’t allow doses to be shipped from the Asian nation. The health regulator, Anvisa, said in a statement Friday that Sao Paulo state’s Butantan Institute can import 6 million doses of the CoronaVac shot that Chinese biopharmaceutical firm Sinovac is developing. The potential vaccine cannot be administered to Brazilians as it isn’t yet approved locally, the statement said. Lake Zurich school officials say new boundaries would alleviate crowding

Lake Zurich Unit School District 95 board members could soon be picking new boundary maps, which administrators say would alleviate crowding and ensure more equitable learning at district schools. Before the board votes on a new map, which it could do as soon as January, members of the community have until the end of the night Sunday to review the options and put in their two cents. Man running 10 marathons in 10 days to feed suburban families on Thanksgiving

Robert Swiderski of Carol Stream is putting his distance-running experience to use by tackling 10 marathons in 10 days throughout the Northwest suburbs to raise awareness of an effort to feed 2,020 families in need this Thanksgiving. Swiderski, 48, is a board member of The Basket Brigade of Suburban Chicago, started five years ago by Brian Walsh of Streamwood to honor the memory of his late mother. It’s currently registering people for its Run for Hope fundraiser.
