By C. Douglas Golden

Inflation didn’t matter when Trump cut millionaires’ taxes, but now that a Democrat’s president…

By Ian Reifowitz
  • Yet, on the other hand, the recently proposed American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan—which would spend $4 trillion over ten years, and pay for it by making the wealthiest individuals and corporations pay their fair share of taxes—are bad ideas according to Republicans because, wait for it, the economy is too weak, even after the ARP’s passage.
  • Earlier this year, when Republicans attacked the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan (ARP) that passed Congress without a single vote from their caucus, they said it would push the economy into overdrive and cause significant inflation.

The Guardian view on David Cameron’s lobbying: a cynical defence won’t wash | Editorial

By Editorial

Lobbying law needs updating because the government is run by people who know the price of everything and value of nothing

Last week, David Cameron, Britain’s former Conservative prime minister, claimed rather implausibly that his frantic lobbying of ministers and officials last year on behalf of failed Australian financier Lex Greensill was motivated by public service rather than private gain. Mr Cameron could say this with a straight face because he would not reveal, in four hours of testimony to MPs, his salary or the payout he was in line for had Greensill Capital survived the pandemic.

The sums were likely to have been embarrassingly large. Mr Cameron did cash in some of his shares in 2019. His reported 1% stake in the supply-chain finance company was reckoned at one stage to be worth £60m. Was Mr Cameron only in it for the money? A windfall would have suggested he was.

Colombians Don’t Just Want a New Government — They Want an End to Neoliberalism

By Forrest Hylton
  • They want an end to systemic corruption; for the militarized riot police to be completely disbanded; for the government to comply with the accords that it signed with students in 2019; a new type of tax reform that would be progressive rather than regressive; public investment in health care (Colombia’s health care system is entirely privatized on the US model); an end to the assassination of movement leaders, which until now has been taking place almost exclusively in the countryside.
  • Beginning on April 28, in a day of protest against a regressive tax reform, the strike wave has since grown in size and spread throughout the country as strikers form a common front against the administration of right-wing president Iván Duque and the political machine of former president Álvaro Uribe.

Uninformed Ricky Schroder Harangues Insanely Patient Costco Worker Over Masks

By Tracy Connor
Facebook

Faded actor Rick Schroder managed to get back on camera—by filming himself grilling a Costco employee who would not let him into the store without a mask, because that’s what the law in California mandates. The 51-year-old Silver Spoons and NYPD Blue star—who was last in the headlines for bailing out Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse—seemed to think he should be allowed to waltz in maskless because the CDC said last week that it’s safe for fully vaccinated people to be indoors without face-coverings. As the Costco worker explained to Schroder with remarkable patience, the CDC announcement did not undo local pandemic restrictions and Costco is still requiring masks in places where the mandate has not yet been lifted. Nevertheless, Schroder bizarrely ranted that everyone in California should “get a refund” from Costco because it’s not violating local regulations.

  • Not that it is a choice against one or the other, or that metapolitics are anti-materialist, but that part of this struggle must be cultural, otherwise the modalities that fascists are offering, which do undermine some of the basic post-enlightenment assumptions, would seem like they’re from another planet to many people.
  • The fascist power inside of the Republican Party — meaning the far right influences that are there in varying degrees at varying points — do have the ability to shift actual state power in the direction of fascism.

Japan’s Olympic-Sized Problem

By Matt Alt
  • (The Games were eventually cancelled altogether, after the outbreak of the Second World War.) The 1964 Summer Olympics, in Tokyo, represented a triumphant comeback for a country that in wartime defeat had fallen to the status of a “fourth-rate nation,” as General Douglas MacArthur put it just days after Japan’s surrender.
  • (Due to bureaucratic red tape, Pfizer remains the only vaccine currently approved for use in Japan.) Infections continue to rage in major cities—the nation experienced more deaths from COVID -19 in the first four months of 2021 than it did in all of 2020, and, as a percentage of the population, the death rate in Osaka is currently outstripping that of India.

Classic Article on Paranoia By Adolf Meyer

  • It is quite possible that the psychological elements had better be dropped as essentials of a dynamic psychology, and that the maintenance of the sharp division of sensation, idea, emotion and will is not worth the effort, except in their proper place and sphere, especially when we inquire into the specific participation of definite sense-organs and nervous mechanisms for our neurological diagnoses.
  • Broadly speaking, almost every mental activity allows us to recognize relations to two fundamental systems, that of the shaping of the personal physio-psychological ('emotional') attitudes of our circulatory, respiratory and vegetative side, and that of the more fleeting and more impersonal neuro-muscular ('intellectual') relations, based on the sense organs per se and the muscular apparatus carrying and directing them.

By Justin Baragona
Fox News Sunday

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) called out House Republican leadership on Sunday morning, claiming they are complicit in spreading former President Donald Trump’s “Big Lie” that the 2020 election was stolen from him. Appearing on Fox News Sunday just days after she was replaced as the House Republican conference chair by Trump loyalist Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who recently said the GOP was “unified in working with” Trump, Cheney recounted recent comments she made to her colleagues.

“What I said in my last remarks to the conference as chairwoman of the conference was that if they were looking for leaders who would be complicit in spreading the big lie, I wasn’t their person, that there were plenty of other people that would do that,” she said, prompting anchor Chris Wallace to ask if she was saying Stefanik and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy are complicit.

“They are. And I’m not willing to do that,” she replied, adding: “What’s happening right now with Donald Trump and his continued attacks on the Constitution and the rule of law is dangerous and we all have an obligation to stand up against that.”

Essential Workers Concerned About CDC’s New Mask Guidance

By Laura Clawson

The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, which represents many grocery workers, is not happy about the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions’ (CDC) new guidance that vaccinated people can go unmasked indoors. Food and retail workers, after all, have been contending all along with people who refused rules about masks, and are now guaranteed to have to contend with people who may be lying about being vaccinated. The honor system guidance doesn’t take these workers into account.

“Millions of Americans are doing the right thing and getting vaccinated, but essential workers are still forced to play mask police for shoppers who are unvaccinated and refuse to follow local COVID safety measures. Are they now supposed to become the vaccination police?” UFCW President Marc Perrone said in a statement. “With so many states already ending their mask mandates, this new CDC guidance must do more to acknowledge the real and daily challenge these workers and the American people still face.”

The UFCW wants the CDC to clarify how exactly workers will be kept safe. And then there’s this:

  • In other words, insurance carriers would be able to go back to medical underwriting for major medical policies...which means they could once again deny coverage of people with pre-existing conditions (PECs), or charge those with PECs exorbitantly higher rates, or simply refuse to cover the particular condition itself (like cancer, for instance).
