Valenta: Saving a puppy from a Central Texas threat

On a cool evening in September, Abigail, a 7-month-old puppy, was playing in her foster’s backyard with the other household dogs. Things quickly turned sour when Abigail met a rattlesnake. She sustained two bites, one on the top of her head and one near her eye. The wound on top of Abigail’s head had fang punctures that were about 3 inches apart. Not only was Abigail bit twice, the rattlesnake who bit her was a large one.Abigail’s foster acted fast and took her to Central Texas Specialty and Emergency Veterinary Services where, thanks to many generous donors, she began her long road to recovery. Travis County reports 102 more coronavirus cases, no new deaths

Travis County health officials on Monday said 102 more people in the county have tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases during the pandemic to 31,653.County health authorities did not report any new COVID-19 deaths on Monday. A total of 449 people in the county have died from coronavirus-related complications, according to local health officials.Of the 114 people who were in the hospital for COVID-19 on Monday, 43 were in intensive care and 18 were on ventilators. Veterans of Bernie Sander’s successful effort to win Latino votes in the 2020 Democratic primaries, are putting nearly a quarter million dollars into Spanish and English radio ads that will begin airing Tuesday in border counties and San Antonio aimed at spurring early voting and Election Day turnout.While the ads, being paid for by America’s Promise Action Fund, cannot make direct partisan appeals, they are intended to stoke Latino turnout in counties with the richest concentration of Latino voters in the state, and the most overwhelmingly Democratic voting habits.
