Norman announces city’s first chief diversity and equity officer

NORMAN — The city of Norman has named Cinthya Allen as the city’s first chief diversity and equity officer.

Allen will be responsible for advising the city on affirmative actions and creating and implementing programs designed to ensure fair and equitable opportunities for residents, staff and council as she shapes the newly created role, according to a news release.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cinthya to the Norman team," City Manager Darrel Pyle said.

Achievers: NASA selects Moore Norman Tech’s programming team as finalist

Moore Norman Technology Center's Programming & Software Development program has been selected as one of 10 teams from across the United States to attend the Culminating Event Experience of the NASA App Development Challenge (ADC).

Moore Norman Technology Center team members include the following seniors: Katrina Ashpaugh, of Norman High School; Travis Bode, Julian Lautzenheiser and Christian Zacher, all of Norman North High School; and Dylan Decoster and Lauren Smith, both of Moore High School.

Teams will present their apps to NASA leadership during the virtual, two-day event in February and will have the chance to meet with industry leaders.

Mustang educator who helped design remodeled classroom gets a surprise

A Mustang Creek Elementary School teacher and her students are enjoying a surprise classroom makeover thanks to True Sky Credit Union’s Sky Crew, with help from Graham Construction.

Mustang Creek Principal Leah Anderson selected educator Rachel Thomas to help with the planning and execution of a model classroom makeover, but Anderson didn't share with Thomas who would be using the remodeled classroom space.

In her design planning, Thomas used her diverse background and 21 years of teaching experience to decide which furniture and technology would be included in the model classroom.

Thomas was brought to tears, however, when it was revealed that the classroom she had designed would belong to her and her students.

“I just wanted what would be best for educators and students,” Thomas said.
