Arctic tern numbers at Long Nanny are holding steady at 730 breeding pairs with 1,346 eggs — a slight uptick but a far cry from pre-flu baselines. The species' recent history at the site is brutal: more than 600 dead chicks from avian flu in 2023, nests wiped out by spring tides in subsequent seasons. Stability is not recovery, but it is the necessary precondition for one. The unevenness of the data is the real story.
