There's a specific New Zealand register of comedy that treats the catastrophic as a minor inconvenience, and 'Mum, I'm Alien Pregnant' lives entirely inside it. Mary (Hannah Lynch) finds herself pregnant after shy neighbour Boo (Arlo Green) accidentally ejaculates on her via his tentacle-bearing alien penis in the communal laundry room. The film does not explain the penis. It does not need to. The deadpan starts here and never breaks. What makes this work is the casting of its supporting players rather than its lead. Yvette Parsons as Cynthia, Mary's single mum, and Jackie van Beek as Ann, Boo's single mum, are the film's comic engine. Parsons gets exercised about flatulence in the presence of erupting alien tissue. Van Beek worries about the mess her immaculate flat is accumulating and keeps apologising to arriving paramedics. These are not reactions built for the camera — they're played as if the actors are slightly embarrassed to be involved, which is exactly right. The gross-out setpieces are deployed with patience. The film does not machine-gun you with body horror; it builds to moments, lets them sit, then watches characters process them at a speed slightly below what you'd expect. Paramedics Sofia (Karen O'Leary) and Sophie (Ariadne Baltazar) arrive and remain professionally unflappable. The joke is always the gap between event and reaction, and the film commits to that gap throughout. Is there subtext about single motherhood, bodily autonomy, and the indignities pregnancy visits on women's bodies? Yes, obviously — the film waves at it honestly and then gets back to the slime. This is the right call. The moment 'Mum, I'm Alien Pregnant' starts underlining its themes, it would collapse; the comedy depends entirely on a refusal to acknowledge that any of this is significant. The metaphor works because it stays underground. This is a short, cheerful, low-budget film that knows exactly what it is and executes it well. It won't make you think hard or feel much, but it will make you laugh at a nest of mucus and alien gristle in a way you won't be able to fully explain to anyone who hasn't seen it. That's a real achievement, just not a large one.
