Simon Rumley's Crushed opens in the kind of Bangkok that doesn't appear in tourism brochures — a city of expat congregations, stray cats, and unseen hotel rooms. The setup is almost unbearably economical: a priest's daughter goes missing after a sleepover corrupted by a crush video, and the father's faith becomes the film's real subject. What follows is less a thriller than a spiritual stress test, and Rumley is smart enough to know the difference. Steve Oram plays Father Daniel with a deliberate, disconcerting blankness — not the righteous fury of a Liam Neeson vehicle, not the broken father of a prestige drama. He's complacent, slightly absurd, a man whose faith functions as insulation from reality. His acoustic guitar rendition of All Creatures Great and Small playing over his daughter's street search is the film's sharpest image: devotion as something genuinely insufficient to the world it inhabits. The film's most interesting structural move is its use of juxtaposition rather than escalation. Rumley keeps cutting between Daniel's lofty pastoral register and the grinding squalor surrounding him, letting the gap do the moral work. It's a technique borrowed from the Schrader playbook — sin and grace occupying the same frame without reconciling — and it mostly works. The problem is Rumley won't stay in the room. Whenever the film approaches its hotel-room horrors directly, it cuts away. This is understandable — there's a serious ethical argument for not staging child abuse — but the effect is that the crimes read as plot machinery rather than spiritual catastrophe. The inquiry into forgiveness that the film promises never fully arrives because the thing that requires forgiving is kept offscreen and euphemistic. Split-screen interrogation sequences that should feel like crucifixions feel instead like procedural shorthand. The film's most honest performance, ironically, is Christian Ferreira's fixer — a supporting role that undergoes the actual moral disintegration the film's priest is supposed to be experiencing. Oram's Daniel is a satirical figure, a man of God tested and found to be running on habit rather than conviction. That's a genuinely interesting reading, but the film can't decide whether to condemn him or redeem him, and the ambivalence tips into incoherence rather than complexity. Crushed is consistently interesting on its own terms — nimble, stylistically alert, carrying a new-wave restlessness that keeps it from becoming lurid. But it promises a Schrader-level reckoning with forgiveness and spiritual nihilism that it ultimately can't deliver. The film goes to the edge and describes what's down there without climbing down. For some viewers, that restraint will read as sophistication. For others, it will feel like the film blinking.
