Federal agents arrested Thomas Markle, 82, at a nursing home near Tampa on Friday, charging him with one count of possession of child sexual abuse material. The charge carries up to 20 years in federal prison. The case, filed as United States of America v Thomas Wayne Markle, lands after a multi-country investigation that began surfacing publicly only weeks ago. A 14-page federal criminal complaint alleges Markle kept child sexual abuse material — including sexually explicit photographs of himself with prepubescent girls — in two Los Angeles-area storage units he rented since 2008, with auto-payments continuing through last month. Agents seized approximately 78 items including slides, photographs, film negatives, and books. An affidavit states that two images showed a man identified by a witness as Markle with a nude underage girl. The FBI says it is still reviewing the recovered material. The investigative chain is notable for its jurisdictional complexity. Markle had lived in the Philippines, where authorities began investigating him last month after his half-brother Thomas Markle Jr alleged he found a stash of images at their father's Philippine residence. British police said they would refer allegations to overseas agencies after discovering that claims received in 2018 had not been passed along. The FBI interviewed a person last month who was aware of the California storage units, connecting the Philippine and US threads. FBI Director Kash Patel framed the arrest in maximalist terms: "This FBI will use every single resource at our disposal to protect innocent kids — any predator who targets children will have zero safe haven in this country or anywhere they try to hide." First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli called the allegations "extremely serious" and pledged prosecution "to the fullest extent of federal law." Some details in the complaint are redacted, including the name of the signing agent from the FBI's violent crimes against children unit in Los Angeles. Markle told the Daily Mail the accusations were "sick lies" and replied "No" when asked directly if he was a pedophile. He did not answer when asked if he had ever collected child sexual abuse material. Photographs showed him being taken away in a wheelchair, in handcuffs, surrounded by agents in FBI jackets. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, had said last month she was "deeply distressed" about allegations and revealed that a letter containing "troubling allegations" about her father was sent to London police in 2018. She has said she distanced herself from her father to protect her children. A spokesperson for the duchess did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the arrest. Markle is a retired television lighting and photography director who did not attend the 2018 wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan amid estrangement. The storage units, rented for nearly two decades with payments maintained by auto-pay, suggest a long-standing pattern rather than a recent aberration — a timeline the FBI will now attempt to reconstruct from 78 seized items.
