The Philippine interior secretary Jonvic Remulla has named Thomas Markle Jr, 60, as a "person of interest" in the child sexual abuse imagery investigation targeting his father, Thomas Markle Sr, 82. Markle Jr originally reported the material to local police and the FBI after claiming to have found four storage boxes containing "hundreds, if not thousands" of child sex abuse images at his father's home in the Philippines. Remulla told a Manila press conference there were "signs that point that the son is involved in the crime as well," while emphasizing Markle Jr is not yet being treated as a suspect. The scale of the material is significant. Authorities uncovered more than 7,000 photos and one video depicting under-age males and females of Asian, Latin, and European descent, with some victims as young as 10 and 11. Remulla described the images as "the most deplorable displays of impunity towards sexual activity that I have ever seen." The alleged involvement of Markle Jr is reportedly not directly linked to the material he himself handed to police. Markle Sr returned to the US from the Philippines in May and has reportedly been moved into a care home for dementia patients. He has admitted paying for sex in the Philippines but has strongly denied possessing child abuse imagery, suggesting he had been "set up." Remulla has previously described Markle Sr as "a possible sex offender of the grossest kind." His son remains in Cebu City. The investigation is multi-jurisdictional. Police and FBI agents have been examining whether Markle Sr possessed illegal images while living in the Philippines and in Mexico, where other illegal images were reportedly found in a storage unit. Markle Jr was recently interviewed at his Cordova, Cebu home as part of an international, multi-agency meeting via Microsoft Teams, giving his statement to an FBI agent based in Florida who specializes in child sex abuse cases. The Duchess of Sussex issued a statement when allegations against her father first surfaced, saying she was "deeply distressed" by the claims. She said she had been informed of disturbing allegations against her father in 2018 and had kept him from contact with her children — Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five — to protect them. The estrangement between Meghan and her father's side of the family, long tabloid fodder, now sits inside an active criminal investigation spanning at least three countries. The structural question here is not about celebrity gossip. It is about whether Philippine and US authorities can execute a coordinated cross-border child exploitation prosecution against elderly or infirm suspects, and whether the whistleblower-turned-person-of-interest dynamic compromises the evidentiary chain. Remulla said authorities would "know in the next few days" whether Markle Jr's status escalates.
