The Plumb is BedrockNews's 0–100 score for how extractive or generative a news event is, and it isn't GRIN-only — BedrockNews derives a Plumb for GRIN, CLAIMS and NOVEL articles alike, each from that framework's own dimensional scores. For GRIN it composites five dimensions — Generativity, Resilience, Generative Efficiency, Novelty Openness, and an inverted Extractive overlay — into one number. The verdict is Extractive when Plumb is 35 or below or Extractive is 4 or higher, Generative when Plumb is 65 or above and Extractive is 2 or below, and Mixed in between. It rates the structure of the event, not its politics: most real-world events land between 20 and 70.
BedrockNews applies a published, versioned framework spec to each source article — GRIN for news, CLAIMS for research papers, NOVEL for culture — using an LLM as the production layer. The transform strips the manipulation, preserves every fact, name, number and date from the original, and adds the structural analysis. The framework is the editorial judgment; it is written once, published, and version-stamped on every article rather than reinvented per story.
BedrockNews sources from The Guardian's licensed Open Platform API, which it pays for; arXiv preprints under arXiv's published terms of use and text-and-data-mining policy; NASA's public-domain newsroom; and the public feeds of Al Jazeera, Deutsche Welle, EurekAlert and Hacker News. BedrockNews does not scrape, does not bypass paywalls, and does not bulk-mirror — every article links back to the original.
Yes. BedrockNews is free to read, and it runs no ads, no SEO games and no engagement bait. It is funded out of pocket today and publishes its actual running costs openly, month by month, on its /costs page. Supporter contributions and a possible paid tier in 2027 are the two routes to sustainability.
Partly, and disclosed on every article. BedrockNews uses Claude to apply its editorial frameworks to source journalism, and every piece carries the mode it was written under (GRIN, CLAIMS or NOVEL), the model that produced it, and the framework version it was scored under. The frameworks themselves are authored by BedrockNews's editorial team, not by the model, and the weekly Ledger column is written by hand. There is no human-impersonation layer.
